VMware Guest Display

Following the instructions here I have gotten pretty close.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=195843

But 1268x735 is still not as good as 1280x800 :-(

ATI Install Steps

Following this guide using method 2: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Gutsy_Installation_Guide

Downloaded the newest drivers: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-7-11-x86.x86_64.run

Verify that the 'universe' and 'multiverse' are set. Using 'System -> Administration -> Software Sources'

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install module-assistant build-essential fakeroot dh-make debhelper \
debconf libstdc++5 linux-headers-generic
Had do follow this link(http://emmetcaulfield.net/tech/Ubuntu64+ATI/) to get around the following error:

dpkg-parsechangelog: error: cannot open debian/changelog to find format: No such file or directory

$ bash ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run --extract ati-driver
$ cd ati-driver
$ cp -r arch/x86/usr/X11R6/lib arch/x86_64/usr/X11R6/
$ ./packages/Ubuntu/ati-packager.sh --buildpkg gutsy
The above code worked.

sudo dpkg -i xorg-driver-fglrx_8.433-1*.deb fglrx-kernel-source_8.433-1*.deb fglrx-amdcccle_8.433-1*.deb

The above code failed.

Where are the *.deb files located?

Looking the processing above, I see that everything was put into the /tmp/ati_driver_installer directory.

It works, but I got the following warning:

dpkg: warning - unable to delete old directory `/etc/X11/Xsession.d/70fglrx_32bit_dri': Directory not empty

I was told to do the following to get rid of old fglrx deb, but there are none.

sudo rm /usr/src/fglrx-kernel*.deb
Compile, now to install. Save everything just in case life ceases as I know it ceases to exists.

Must verify after everything is done that the following links are present

sudo ln -sf /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/misc/fglrx.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/volatile/fglrx.ko

I will have to recompile, do the above steps again, for each new kernel update. Must keep an eye out for kernel updates.

I have not done the step to get around the soft links being delete.

Now it is time to reboot.

I now have some trash in two spots near and at the bottom of the screen. :-(

Looks like my links may have gotten blasted :-(

OK, I have put in the link fix. Rebooting.

Did not reboot. I had to force the machine to shutdown.

It has rebooted and now the trash is gone.

The trash is back :-(

What is the max resolution of my screen? 1280x800

Finally everything looks right and the trash seems to be gone for good.

I did all this so I could run XP in WMServer at the max host res of 1280x800, but I still cannot.

Video Driver

I seem unable to get the proper video resolutions.

This is a link to my hardware settings: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/BladeK8F/1013912Rsp2.shtml

My video card:
ATI RS485M
ATI Radeon® Xpress 1150 Graphics with
up to 128 MB of Shared Video Memory

To see what Ubuntu sees: System ==> Preferences ==> Hardware Information
==> RS480 PCI Bridge ==> RS485 [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP]

See the correct card but doesn't sam RS485M

This is a link to a wiki for the proprietary drivers for ATI: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page

I am having trouble figuring this out.

RS480 is the PCI number.

Search on "Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP"
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=542338

Found this page which refers to the chip as a Radeon Xpress 200M: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_ATI_chipset

The chip doesn't seem to currently support DRI (Direct Rendering Infrastructure)

Do I have to disable it when using fglrx?

Goggle has a Linux search: http://www.google.com/linux

Here is the Ubuntu install instruction for the ATI drivers: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu

fglrx is already installed.

stan@stan-laptop:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon Xpress Series
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6473 (8.37.6)

Unable to Write CD??

For some reason I am unable to write CDs now. It work earlier :-(

Rebooting has solved my problem.

When I put the a blank CD in and it is working it will recognize the CD at which point I say ignore and than go to where is the ISO is located and write it directly to the CD.

Adding the Sansa e140 to HAL

Found the 10-usb-music-player.fdi file.

It has an entry for Sansa e130. Copied that. Changed the name to Sansa e140.

stan@stan-laptop:~$ lsusb
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 062a:0001 Creative Labs Notebook Optical Mouse
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0781:7302 SanDisk Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
stan@stan-laptop:~$

The vendor ID is the same; however, the product id has changed from 7301 to 7302.

Save file in ~\tmp

This is the link that I was getting my information from http://blog.pcode.nl/?p=176

Copying the new file to its correct location and rebooting:

stan@stan-laptop:~/tmp$ sudo cp 10-usb-music-players.fdi /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/
Password:
stan@stan-laptop:~/tmp$

I worked the icon has now changed to an mp3 player.

What does Banshee think of it now?

The setting are still wrong. It is trying to write Ogg files.

Delete the .files.

I crashed Banshee when I unmount the player outside of it and than tried to eject within Banshee.

Now Banshee sees nothing :-(

Banshee Problems

Banshee is really running slow.

The slowness seems to occur when I am creating a new song list or when I change the name of the song list.

CPU1 and CPU2 seems to swapping back and forth between each other, but one of the seems to always be at 100%.

I was going to try to use Banshee to copy the new Steven Curtis Chapman music over to my MP3 Player, however, it seem totally locked up.

Should I kill Banshee and started it again?

It is not responding. Forcing it to quite.

That was quick.

It come back quick also. But the new play list is missing as is the new audio that I just loaded.

Also the Sansa e140 is still set to encode to Ogg Vorbis which is not what I want. I want it to be mpeg.

Updating to Gutsy Gibbon

The normal update manager has problem getting to the Debian site.

I down load install install CD, but it is the wrong I need to download the alternated CD.

At first I could not find the alternate CD. There is a check box below everything. However, this looks just like the other CD but simply lacking Live CD. Humm ;-!

The update web site (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GutsyUpgrades) says "Upgrading using the alternate CD/DVD".

  1. Download and burn the alternate installation CD.

  2. Insert it into your CD-ROM drive.

  3. A dialog will be displayed offering you the opportunity to upgrade using that CD.

  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

If the upgrade dialog is not displayed for any reason, you may also run the following command using Alt+F2:

gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"

Or in Kubuntu run the following command using Alt+F2:

kdesu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"
OK, I am now waiting for an hour.

This works.

Upgrading without getting the newest stuff from the internet.

Says that some 3rd party entries for sources.list were disable.

Can re-ebable using 'software-properties' tool or package manager.

May need to enable community maintained software universe to see some packages for which supported has ended.

Cancelled the updatge. Will do later.

Organizing Banshee

I seem unable to simply drag the song to where I can it to be, but I can sort on any column.

Also I can edit the songs metadata.

Changing the preferences so that the metadata is written back to the song if possible.

Adding Banshee

This looks like a nice piece software that will let me write out my selections as mp3s.

This uses GNOME but works well with KDE.

Load all the music in from my home directory.
